Classic or Contemporary?

We all know I have a bit of a penchant for vintage styling, not in a completely obvious way, but I like to incorporate little vintage flourishes into my outfits. It might be a headscarf, a bag, or maybe some jewellery. I find mixing vintage pieces with high street can make an outfit that little bit more unique.
I was recently asked to take part in a style challenge with JD Williams. The focus is all about trends and styles that have come back into fashion and how to style them either classically or in a more contemporary way. I love a good style challenge as it gives me licence to push boundaries and step outside my comfort zone. So I decided to go with something completely outside my usual style. The 70s boho/folk trend seems to come round every few years, and although I’ve done it for a couple of summers, I’ve never tried the much richer autumnal version of it.

Cue big floppy hat. Oh my goodness, I love it. If I’m completely honest I was a little apprehensive, I thought I would indeed look like a complete idiot, and some of you might think I do, but I love it, so there! I love the rich aubergine colour against the really pretty blue of the dress.
The dress is a beautiful folk print and the fit is spot on. I’m wearing my usual 22 and despite the fact this dress has no stretch, it’s really not needed. There is a tie to the back, but you could always pop a belt on if you prefer.

I love the length of this dress, for someone a bit knee-phobic like me it’s perfect. The dress is available in Petite, Regular and Tall so it’s really great for all heights! I’m a distinctly average 5’7″ and I’m wearing the regular length so that should give you a rough idea of where this will sit on you.

This is a very romantic look for me, I know I’m known for a more tough look, but I think with the addition of the hat it really takes this already pretty dress to another level. I added the chunky boots just to give it a tougher look too, but this would look equally as nice with some tan coloured wedges or imagine it with some berry coloured suede knee high boots in the winter, how gorgeous would that be?!

I’m sorry about all the picture spam, but I just love this look so much, and the light outside was so pretty we got a bit carried away!

And the big question is have I style is classic or contemporary? Well I’m not all together sure! I think I’m bordering on a bit of both, what do you think?
