Fed up of staring at a blank wall? Whether you’ve recently moved into your new home or have lived there a while, filling those empty walls could be important for helping your home to feel cosier and more lived-in. Here are just a few different ways in which you can put an empty wall to use.

Artwork

One of the most common ways to fill an empty wall is to hang some artwork on it. This could be anything from an expensive collector piece to a piece of art you did yourself.

Art can have a big impact on the mood of a room. A large landscape painting could provide depth and a connection to the outside world, while also giving the room a serene atmosphere. Vibrant abstract art pieces could meanwhile bring energy to a room while also giving a room a decidedly modern feel. Consider this while choosing the right painting.

Memories

An empty wall could also be used for sharing happy memories. These could help your home to feel more personalised and serve as talking points for when you invite guests over.

Photographs are the most obvious example of this. These could be photographs or people or places that are meaningful to you. You could opt for a large blown up photograph, multiple small photos in frames or even a large home-made collage.

Another option could be to hang up souvenirs. These could be masks or hats or ceramics collected from travels. You could even add a map of the world and mark out the places you’ve been if you’re an avid globetrotter.

Achievements

You could also use walls to show off your achievements. These could help to fill you with a sense of pride when you look at them, as well as being used to impress guests.

Such achievements could include certificates or medals relating to sports or education. You could even show off rare collectibles that you’ve obtained on shelves or in glass cases.

Vintage toys are one of the most popular collectables you can invest in to make your walls worth looking at twice. Toy cars are a common collector’s item, particularly Tonka Toy cars and Hot Wheels. You can also put porcelain collectable dolls and Star Wars collectables in wall-mounted display cabinets. A vintage stamp collection can also make your walls stand out. Stamp collection fuses a love of history and art, allowing collectors to learn a lot about their country of origin and the political and social atmosphere at the time of the stamps’ creation. Old coins, electronics, and comics are some other collectables you can display.

Clocks

You could also occupy an empty wall by hanging a clock on it. As well as helping you to keep track of the time, a wall clock can be a striking decorative feature.

You can shop for unique wall clocks online. Consider matching the clock to the style of your home – an antique clock could be a better option for an older home than a modern wacky clock.

Mirrors

Mirrors are another great option for filling empty walls. On top of allowing you to check your reflection, mirrors can have a variety of other benefits. Placing a mirror opposite a window could help to reflect more sunlight into the room and give off the illusion of another window. Mirrors can also make a room feel larger by adding the illusion of extra depth.

For a traditional styled home, you could opt for an ornate framed mirror. Alternatively, in a modern home, you could find that a frameless mirror is more effective. Make sure to carefully consider the size of the mirror and avoid placing mirrors opposite one another.

Shelving

Another way of putting your empty wall to use could be to add shelving. This could be used for storing anything from books to ornaments.

Shelving can come in all forms. You could opt for a single floating shelf or a hanging shelving unit. Always take the time to make sure that shelving is secure and level before using it. Be wary of the fact that shelving can protrude into the room, making it look and feel smaller – it should be used modestly in a small room for this reason.

Feature walls

A feature wall is a wall that is decorated uniquely to all the others. This can be a way of bringing character to a room and could be a useful way of using the wall if you don’t want to hang anything on it.

The simple way of creating a feature wall is to paint it a different colour. This could include having one wall deep blue or red in an otherwise white room. Different colours can provide different moods, so take this into account.

Alternatively, you could decorate it in wallpaper or a vibrant mural. This can make an empty wall immediately feel busy and energetic.

You can even play with the texture of a wall. Exposed brick walls are very popular and can provide a rustic feel. Alternatively you could add wooden panels or tiles to a single wall (a feature tiled wall is common in a bathroom or kitchen).
