How to Use Feng Shui for Interior Design

If you’re wondering what Feng Shui means the Feng part means wind and the Shui part means water. It’s derived from an ancient poem that reminds us of the connection between humans and nature. In recent times it has become associated with interior design as people incorporate the principles of creating harmony with objects into the home. While an expert may be ultimately required to get it perfect, there is much you can achieve on your own. Here is a brief rundown of the practice.

The Eight Areas

Bagua is loosely translated as the eight areas, and it represents the eight areas of your life. These are wealth, fame, love, family, children, knowledge, career, and helpful people. However, these are traditional categories and can be changed to correspond to your own life. The eight areas are an energy map of your house. Make a three by three square that corresponds to different areas of your house. This map will help you identify your energy areas.

The Five Elements

Along with the Bagua map, Feng Shui also uses the five elements to bring balance to your life. These are earth, metal, water, wood, and fire. Each element corresponds to a different aspect of personality, emotion, sensitivities, or character. The elements can be taken literally, such as using wooden furniture or metaphorical, with appropriate incense, for instance. These five elements also correspond to areas on the Bagua map so you can decorate your home in the appropriate way – this brings more balance into your home and supports the flow of Qi.

Yin and yang

Yin and yang is an ancient Chinese philosophy that is the driving force behind many fields of study, such as martial arts and medicine. Yin and Yang is a philosophy of duality that symbolises the opposing forces of reality. They possess two separate energy types; Yin energy is soft and passive, while Yang energy is aggressive and bold. Both energies are necessary for life, and both are integral to the energy of your home. Choose Yin energy for quiet, passive places like the bedroom or for Wet Rooms Design. For more active rooms like the kitchen and home office, it’s best to go with Yang.

How to Adopt it in the home

This article represents a very brief outline of the ancient practice of Feng Shui. It goes back thousands of years and requires an expert to do well. That doesn’t mean you can’t begin to practice it on your own. Invest in some books and make small changes in line with expert advice. Grow into the tradition. If you’re more serious about it might be an idea to consult a Feng Shui expert who can advise you better than books.

Feng shui is a complex tradition, with numerous components that require quite a bit of study to interpret fully. While you can certainly take baby steps into the world of feng shui on your own, many people find it helpful to consult feng shui experts to really revamp their space.
